I finally hit the road at the end of October on an adventure that I’d been dreaming about for ages. I packed up my life in Toronto and headed out on a six-month road trip south-west through the US and then, eventually, down into Mexico.

The trip didn’t exactly start off as planned … I didn’t even make it to the US border before I had an unexpected mechanical issue. Luckily, nobody was hurt and, in spite of the hassles getting the van towed and the three-day delay waiting for repair work to be completed, this could have been SO MUCH WORSE. All-in-all, this ended up being only a minor setback.
Once I got back on the road, I’ve enjoyed my travels through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. I stopped at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton. I toured along historic Route 66 with stops at Cadillac Ranch and the Route 66 Auto Museum in Santa Rosa.

Without a doubt the landscapes I’ve been driving through have stolen the show. Wow! I’ve been blown away by the mesas, mountains, arches, and the desert vistas. I find myself wanting to stop and take photos around almost every corner.

Another highlight of the trip so far has been meeting people along the way — my van, Benji attracts lots of attention and is a good ice-breaker for striking up conversations with fellow travellers. I’ve also reunited with some friends along the way, stopping to say hi to friends in St Louis and Kansas. I’ve enjoyed the outstanding hospitality and chances to take a break from my travels.
I’ve captured some of the highlights of my trip so far in a video that you can find on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/xncUoHC8cGg
Thanks for following along.
